Understand work doesn’t necessarily happen at work.
Google and other high-end companies realized providing employees with free time to work on whatever they want not only motivates them to work harder, but it also is an endless machine of new products and services. It might sound counter-intuitive, but it works!
Build a manifesto.
Before you even open up the company make sure you know exactly what you want your work culture to be. Are you going to be more focused on time spent at the company or on results delivered? Do you care about productivity, happiness, both? Think about these concepts before launching.
Find a location for your office near your home.
This one is a bit selfish, but it will guarantee you a very comfortable life in terms of transportation. Walking to your office is a priceless source of happiness.
Make sure it is located in a commercial area. Your employees might need to go out and grab a coffee, or eat at a deli, and that means it is important you don’t set your office in an isolated area. If you leave in an isolated place, try to set it up on the nearest commercial hub in the city.
Use co-working spaces.
You don’t need to set an office at all. At first, you might be the only employee so work from home and separate work areas from rest areas. But once you grow, in case you don’t have the cash but still need high speed internet and good facilities consider renting a couple of places in a co-working space.
Recognize efforts as well as results.
When you have your team up and running it is essential that you understand they are going to have to walk a learning curve. This means they will make mistakes for a month or so. Understand this is part of the process, and praise their efforts, not only their results.
Make it fun.
Make sure you and your employees have access to an area in which they can rest, a place where they can play charades or FIFA. Work has to be fun to be meaningful, and providing a positive environment not only will make you and your team happier, but it will also help you work better
